TWO LEGENDARY BATTLES。
ONE FEARLESS WARRIOR 。 。 。

________

Themistocles stands as an archon of Athens: the might of the city is his to command。 Yet he is no nobleman, distrusted by many for his modest birthright。

For his presumption。

But those who stand against him cannot argue with two things: his victories as a warrior and the vast Persian force heading their way。

And so Themistocles must fight。 To survive the game of politics, to make his name, he must prove himself again and again in battle。 On the sea。 On land。 In the arena of public opinion。

His enemies are legion, his allies do not trust him and the Persians would corrupt him - but history belongs to the courageous 。 。 。

A wonderful story about how a new democracy copes with a foreign invasion of an imperial tyrant。 Quite relevant。。。

Themistocles Tells the story of the end of Xerxes invasion of Greece with the burning of Athens and the Persian defeat at Salamis。 The Greeks have a short respite only to experience another invasion a year later culminating at the Battle of Salamis。 Up steps the hero。

Conn at his best toAs good as the emporer series and the Khan series 。just about to read lion on my holiday to conclude this series。

Brilliant。 But Gates of Athens was better。 I felt the focus was on the battles (which did not have a ton of depth as expected from the author) and the characters。。。instead of the enviornment around them。 Still, cracking read and educational; looking forward to book 2

There are always pros and cons expected from mr。 Iggulden (I have written about those earlier, as an author he certainly hasn't ever changed much) Here I think pros slightly outweigh the usual cons。 I always tend to like more his books which has a topic and people I know little - or anything at all - of compared to more familiar history to me。 I was also delighted to know about two important ancient battles that a) saved democracy & b) saved Europe from Arab rule。 There are always pros and cons expected from mr。 Iggulden (I have written about those earlier, as an author he certainly hasn't ever changed much) Here I think pros slightly outweigh the usual cons。 I always tend to like more his books which has a topic and people I know little - or anything at all - of compared to more familiar history to me。 I was also delighted to know about two important ancient battles that a) saved democracy & b) saved Europe from Arab rule。 。。。more

I loved the first book, Gates of Athens - maybe because it covered the Battle of Thermopylae, which may be my favorite in history。 Protector was still great, but it didn't capture my interest to the same level。This novel follows Themistocles, who was responsible for the ruse that led to victory over the Persian fleet at Salamis - another amazing historical battle, retold here surprisingly briefly sans all the excitement。 Themistocles was an interesting character, if this version is any indicatio I loved the first book, Gates of Athens - maybe because it covered the Battle of Thermopylae, which may be my favorite in history。 Protector was still great, but it didn't capture my interest to the same level。This novel follows Themistocles, who was responsible for the ruse that led to victory over the Persian fleet at Salamis - another amazing historical battle, retold here surprisingly briefly sans all the excitement。 Themistocles was an interesting character, if this version is any indication: a man as scorned by his own people, in spite of delivering victory after victory, as his ego outsizes Athens。 I found myself smiling at him in one situation and rolling my eyes in the next。Trust me, Protector is only "dull" compared to Gates of Athens; it still beats the pants off most books out there。 Worth the read for sure。 。。。more

Paolo Calabrò

Too much time wasted on internal monologue of every character。

Stuart

Fantastic detail as always。 Sometimes it feels as if the author was actually present during discussions and debates。 This is opening up a period of history I knew nothing about。

Barry Brown

It just doesn’t get any better than this。 Historical fiction is so much fun。 Not just entertaining but factual learning of times a long time ago。 This author tells the story so well you can see the battles。

3。5/5。 I did like this book and was really glad to have it with me to read through during my Covid isolation。 I think I wanted to be moved more deeply – the helots at Plataea moved me the most。

It’s just me。 I never finished this book。 As a matter of fact I couldn’t make it past 50 pages thus my one star review。 So many similar foreign names (Greek) that I couldn’t really keep track of who-was-who。 Thus I couldn’t get any sense of the character development。 Sorry。 It’s just me。

I dont think the series is as good as Ceaser or Gengis but still a great read。

The Library Cop

a brilliant sequel

Stuart Duffey

Very good book and follow up to the first book。 It is a bit jumpy as there is not one set protagonist and of the contenders none a pushed to be the main focal point the way Xanipathos was in the first book。 Would of liked a stronger female character or two in here also at the expense of some of the Spartan pov but understand this is world building for the next set of books。 Enjoyed it a lot and the atmosphere set up about battles and political situations is as ever with Iggulden is excellent。

Perfect Historical Fiction Conn Iggulden has done it again with yet another masterpiece of historical fiction。 Cementing his place with the greats of the genre such as Bernard Cornwell, Robert Low ,and Gary Jennings。 This tale of the battles of Salamis and Platea will keep you turning pages into the wee hours of the morning。

Janet

Excellent - as is always the case with Conn Iggulden。

JaNel

I’m extremely disappointed in his lack of female characters。 Why in the world would he not represent General Artemisia, a fascinating historical character if ever there was one。This book was not as compelling as the first。

Mel

Really good。 Can’t wait for the next one in the series。

Tony Tavernor

Cracks on at a great pace。

Daniel Morgan

Another brilliant book by Conn Iggulden, really enjoying the Athenian series, highly recommend。

Martin Klekner

Better than the first part for sure! The battles were not as grippimg as I expected, but especially the characters, their relatioships and even the politics were awesome to read about!

I'd actually give this 3。5 if you could give half stars。 This Athenian series isn't quite as powerful as the Genghis Khan series was, but it's still interesting to learn about the Persian invasions of Greece。 I enjoyed the book and if you are into historical fiction you could do a lot worse。 I'd actually give this 3。5 if you could give half stars。 This Athenian series isn't quite as powerful as the Genghis Khan series was, but it's still interesting to learn about the Persian invasions of Greece。 I enjoyed the book and if you are into historical fiction you could do a lot worse。 。。。more

Conn Iggulden is among the finest historical fiction writers of our time。 As befits a book about a time of greatest peril for the city-states of ancient Greece, this novel is testosterone fueled。 That is as any man of any city-states of ancient Hellas would accept, by long custom。 The plot, with the exception of that wholly imagined by Iggulden, closely follows what we know about the battles of Salamis and Plataea, and the politics of the time, as filtered through Athenian eyes。 The one tiny qui Conn Iggulden is among the finest historical fiction writers of our time。 As befits a book about a time of greatest peril for the city-states of ancient Greece, this novel is testosterone fueled。 That is as any man of any city-states of ancient Hellas would accept, by long custom。 The plot, with the exception of that wholly imagined by Iggulden, closely follows what we know about the battles of Salamis and Plataea, and the politics of the time, as filtered through Athenian eyes。 The one tiny quibble I have is, Iggulden imagines Persian general Mardonius killed by spear thrusts of anonymous Spartan hoplites。 I prefer the legend that a Spartan named Aeimnestus threw a rock at Mardonius´ head, killing him。 。。。more

I enjoyed this second book in the series even better than the first! The reason I think is there was just more action。 The first book spent a lot of time establishing the individuals who we would be following, which was great but I found parts of it somewhat slow, but the work put in there definitely allows this book to cover a lot more of the action and battles。 Even throughout all the action we still see the personalities and styles of the individuals we got to know so well in the first book s I enjoyed this second book in the series even better than the first!
